Welcome to SPARK!

A participatory, inclusive creativity event…
.

that’s SPARK, and we want you to join us!

Open to writers, musicians, and visual artists of all kinds, SPARK takes place four times each year.

During each 10-day project round, participants create a new piece of work using someone else’s art, writing, or music as inspiration. All resulting work is then displayed online, alongside the piece that inspired it.

This site contains inspiration and response pieces from SPARK’s 2010 – 2012 rounds. You can view those pieces by clicking “Home,” above. You can also see the results from SPARK’s first six rounds here.

SPARK rounds take place in February, May, August, and November and are open to all. If you’d like to join us, send Amy a note!

More about the project

SPARK was founded in 2008 by me, Amy Souza. I had been trying to combine my own art and writing with not very good results.

I turned to a group of amazing artists I’d met at the Art League in Alexandria, Virginia, and talented writers from the Vermont College of Fine Arts, asked if they’d be interested in trading and responding to each other’s work, and was thrilled when many of them said “yes.”

SPARK’s first round featured 10 writers and 10 artists. Since then, more than 400 people from around the world have taken part…many more than once. As of SPARK 17, the project has resulted in more than 1,000 new works of art, writing, video, and music….and that number keeps just keeps growing!

SPARK is open to all, and for now it is free for participants. It will remain free for as long as I can keep it that way!
