My Devil

There are those who dream
Of genies in bottles, but
I have a devil.
Better the devil you know
Than the devil you don’t.
Petulant, he whines
Until there is little choice
But to release him.
The devil made me do it.
Giddy with freedom
My devil will wreak havoc
If I allow him.
The devil is the author of confusion.
Clever mimic he
Now Pan, satyr of the woods
Next, king of the sea.
Give the devil his due.
He lures and he boasts
Connives, schemes, manipulates
Turns me inside out.
We are each our own devil.
Somewhere an angel
Flutters and twists helplessly.
The devil takes all.
