Inspiration piece

Already Late

by Jules Rolfe

Opened our eyes late today and came in the back way
Could have been the first wheels on the road
Four windows down smelling earthy green undergrowth
Swerving to miss papa cardinals and grey-backed robins
Sweeping the road for early morning treats

Dawn’s water hung low along the river in the trees
Empty train cars squealed round’ the curve
Breaking rhythm in the morning’s forest song
Spied the tail of the last freight car clearing the bridge
We were both gone and already late
